The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a national "mobile device management" system to enable secure connections by up to 100,000 mobile computing devices to its enterprise network.

These devices would include smartphones and tablet computers running Apple, Android and Windows operating systems.  The mobile management system will enable the devices to be remotely managed, provide strong enterprise security including encryption, and also provide reporting capabilities, according to a request for information published on the Federal Business Opportunities Web site.

The system initially will support 10,000 mobile devices and be scalable up to 100,000 in additional increments of 10,000. The VA intends to award a contract for a base period of one year with four one-year options.

The contractor also will develop a VA-private app store to deliver customized applications to the mobile devices.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
